Up to very recently RISC OS [4] Select was simply a list of plans and hopes on the RISCOS Ltd website. Now I've seen it in operation. Over the next few weeks I'll bring you my opinion of the Select scheme.

Is it a big jump or simply bug-fixes?

Have RISCOS Ltd listened to our requests?

What is the response of hardware and software developers?

Is it worth the money?

Initial feedback, to My RISC OS [5] and direct to me, has centred on two aspects of the Select scheme:

When do we get the Internet stuff?
When do we get a new Printers?

The preview that I'm writing describes what was, to all intents and purposes, ready two weeks ago. It describes what will be available from the start of the Select scheme which is planned to last 2 years.

Some items will be released in Select #2 - about 4 months down the line - but most will be available immediately.

Those simply interested in Printers might like to check the RISCOS Ltd support site for an update to the current RO4 version (but not part of Select.

As RISCOS Ltd intend to produce three Select releases each year it can be seen that I'm hardly describing the whole of RISC OS 4+ here!

That explains why I've concentrated on the wishy-washy stuff. If we don't know what is to be in the next 80% of Select how can we preview the whole lot?

My answer is to look at the goals that RISC OS Ltd have set themselves (see my article #3) and see how far RISC OS Ltd have got with their first release - CD#1.

Finally I'm trying to limit my descriptions to what I've actually seen working. As soon as possible I'll add a review of what I've been able to use for myself rather than just seen demonstrated.

I've started with an introduction to Select and am previewing each part of the new operating system. Like Select itself I'll take note of your feedback and update my preview as we go.

Very finally; a question:

Has anyone checked the My RISC OS stats page to see what operating systems have been used to view My RISC OS?
