RISCOS Ltd [4] have released more information on Select, a newer version of !Printers (1.64a - with a cryptic message saying the fully featured version is on Select - does this mean those who don't want Select have to put up with a crippled version?)and more info for programmers about Select.

With more and more info being released on Select, the list is now looking good, except for a few points - it's still a large number of bug fixes and doesn't provide any sign of where it is leading to! Without the knowledge of where we will get with Select, combined with the current feeling of developers towards ROS Ltd, it will remain to be seen if it will do much to stimulate large scale developments.

Brilliant - except for one thing, the website is hideously broken (the front page links lead to nowhere!) so it may take a while to find what you're looking for.

In related noises, support for 3.7 is no more. No real suprise there as ROS Ltd don't have access to the sources for 3.7!

While this is good in two ways (forcing people to get up to date OS and machines, removal of legacy) it is also bad (people don't want to upgrade or rely on legacy). With companies long since left the platform for updating the legacy code, this seems self defeating....

As usual bluebottle has a fly in his hat. I presume that RISCOS Ltd will produce a new version of !Printers as part of Select. In other words it will be part of the new Operating System and may even make good use of the additional facilities of the new OS.
In the meantime they've put out an improved version of the one that was issued with RISC OS 4.0x. That's bad?
I don't know if bluebottle has seen any of RISC OS 4+ - he wasn't there at the Press Meeting - but it certainly seems to be far more than a number of bug fixes. And as far as not knowing where it's going - perhaps he could read my Select articles - the Preface (this weekend's update) and the one about Design Goals. If you're producing a product over 2 years then you need to look at the intentions - and RISCOS Ltd have spelled them out; of course if RISCOS Ltd fail to meet those goals I'll be complaining as loud as bluebottle - but they haven't issued the first 20% yet! Give them a chance.
No support for 3.7?
I can't see that RISCOS Ltd can give substantially more support than dealers; they don't have access to the code which would be there only real specialist point.
Leaving legacy software?
There's a large part of me that shouts - GOOD! Software that's being developed and software that is to be written needs support. There are people relying on Computer Concepts (Impression and ArtWorks) but the former can be imported into Ovation Pro, and may even be tweaked to work on 4+ whilst ArtWorks is getting some magnificent support from Martin Wuerthner - and I believe it will continue to work on 4+.
Remember RISCOS Ltd say that software that runs on 4.0x will also run on 4+ (illegal code excepted).
The big divide was with 3.7 where big chunks of older software had problems - far less software had problems with 4.0x (as bluebottle knows as he is the world expert on that!) and I'd guess that even less will have problems with 4+.
