Hi there,

I am intrested in RISC OS after using it at Primary School and I am amazed how it is held on 4meg of RAM, but please convince me to try and purchase a RISC PC or something like that, is the OS any good?

Hi,

Thanks for your interest. I've used RISC OS for many years now, my current machine is a Risc PC and yes it does have RISC OS in the ROM in just 4Mb. The operating system is very compact and therefore can fit into such a small amount of memory. If you want to do a little research on RISC OS, you might like to have a look around http://www.riscos.com.

Due to the OS being in the ROM, it loads pretty quickly after power up or reboots and is also there should the worst happen and you loose your hard drive etc.

Those familiar with RISC OS often say that it is much nicer to use than Windows because it lets the user decide how things will be done, without the operating system getting in the way. The user interface is also quite user friendly, although if you are from a Windows background, things will seem a little odd at first.

Quick tips, left mouse button used for selecting stuff, middle mouse button will always give a menu related to what you are pointing at (if a menu is available) and the right mouse button is for adjusting selections.

For a little more info, you may like to take a look at http://www.blastzone.demon.co.uk/

Find the link on the front page, for RISC OS Tutorial.

Hope that's of some help.

Regards

Hi Steve

Thanks for the info about the OS, do you have any info about the Hardware? I am looking into buying a 2nd hand one for about £150-200 and I am stuck to look about.

Thanks very much

Hi Justin,

To get hold of some hardware, you might like to get to a RISC OS related show such as the one coming up in Wakefield http://www.wakefieldshow.org.uk

If you take a look at the exhibitors page on that site, you will see a number of useful addresses.

Although I'm not recommending any, you may be able to obtain what you are looking for from say, ITC-UK http://www.itc-uk.co.uk or CJE Micros http://www.cjemicros.co.uk

Additionally, ebay sometimes has some attractive offers of Risc PCs.

Hope that helps.
