Aaron Timbrell, that multifaceted man of many guises has sent this through. I'm not going to repeat it verbatim incase anyone from another one of the news portals thinks we're just going to repeat whatever people send us...

Just a quick note to let everyone know that the next RISCWorld will be going through letterboxes all over the world in the next few days.

RISCWorld is the CD based subscription magazine, published bimonthly by APDL, it also makes an excellent drinks coaster to keep coffee stains off your mousemat (no it doesn't - it makes you think that this is how good magazines should be - ed)

This exciting issue includes, words, pictures and punctuation, but not necessarily in the right order. Among the highlights are:

    • Insider on the new Iyonix PC from Castle Technology
    • the 2nd part of our serialisation of the Archimedes GameMakers Manual
    • reviews of Desktop Repton and NTUser2.
    • The very useful OS_ReadArgs call also gets a thorough examination.
    • Continuing series include HTML Convertors, writing modules, networking (this issue how to share the internet connection on your PC with a RISC OS machine) and of course advanced coverage of
      Powerbase.

We also have all the regulars, including the PD column, GamesWorld, DiscWorld, the letters page and more.

Oh and Hugh Jampton still has his own column with a very funny photo

RComp release DialUp2 3070 Reads applications
News has reached us that RComp have radically updated their DialUp software.

It has some really fun new features such as

    • being able to link different ISPs to different times of the day as well as being able to map no ISP to a time of day (prevents anyone going on line)
    • news and mail handling has been worked on so that POP3 email boxes can be temporarily disabled and periodic news checks made while online
    • email can now be sent as soon as it's queued
    • shortcuts introduced for easier access to your newsgroup listing and accounts.
    • improved use on home networks and as a backup for when the always on broadband connection becomes always off
    • now compliant with Select's global clipboard (this actually covers the entire of the RComp Internet Suite as well)
    • an autoredial has been added (useful for ISPs which time out like Freeserve)
    • added support for users running proxy software on networks
    • lots of new ISP configuration files added

Obviously all of these improvements will cost and for the stonkingly huge figure of 12UKP (inc. p&p) you can have this wonderful new piece of software (provided you also return your original discs)

The next meeting of the RISC OS North West User Group (RONWUG) will be:

    The MicroDigital Omega
David Atkins (Managing Director, MicroDigital Ltd)

    7pm for 7:45pm, Wednesday 17th July 2002

Trafford Metrovick Rugby & Cricket Club
    Finnybank Road
    Sale
    Cheshire
    M33 6LR

Not only should the prototype be on display to see and try out, but David will of course be talking about the Omega, and about MicroDigital's wider development programme and future plans. MicroDigital's activities are much more extensive than just producing a couple of computers, and this is the chance to hear the details from David himself (rather than by rumour from other sources). There will also be the opportunity for questions.

Due to the unfortunate unavailability of Jack Lillingston from Castle Technology, who has some business commitments, the Wakefield RISCOS Computer Club have had a last minute change of event for this Wednesday (3rd of July).

We have luckily been able to arrange an alternative guest speaker. David Atkins from Microdigital has agreed to visit us with an Omega Computer. Why not come along to see one in action.

Guests are more than welcome to our meetings, although non-members pay a small fee for entry (£1.50). Meetings are held at the West Yorkshire Sports & Social Club in Sandal, Wakefield and start at 7:45pm.

Full details of the club venue are available on the club website at www.wrocc.org.uk. Free parking and bar facilities are available at the venue.

Steve Potts - Club Secretary - Wakefield RISCOS Computer Club

Note: Looks well worth a visit folks :-)

Unlike some RISC OS mags out there with strange unaccountable delays, dubious changes of editor and other fun excuses, RiscWorld seems to be going from strength to strength with the launch of Vol. 3 of the CD based mag...

This very morning a straining postman collected all the copies of RISC World for delivery to all our eager readers. So in the next few days a shiny CD containing the latest issue will be dropping through doormats all over the world. For those that don't know RISC World is the subscription only CD based magazine for users of RISC OS computers published by APDL.

This issue sees a number of exclusives, including Dave Holden's visit to MicroDigital to see a working Omega computer. We also have our Wakefield show report and reviews of Crystal, the first Select CD and of course, TEK.

Simtec Electronics, famous for their ARM processor hardware and more recently, the NET 100 ethernet cards have just announced a range of USB interfaces for the RISC OS market.

There are two versions. One is an ISA card (USB11-isa) suitable for the RiscStation R7500. The other is a podule version (USB11-pod). This means that they are suitable for Acorn computers, such as the RISC PC, A7000, A5000 and even the lowly A310!

In addition, there is a full support website that already contains a user guide and full-on Device driver API documentation - culminating in about 300 pages!

News in from Cerilica and it's very good news indeed...

    Cerilica Vantage new pricing

Following on from the great reception to Cerilica's premier product re-alignment at the Wakefield show, we are pleased to announce the package's new format and amazing price.

The Wakefield show saw the launch of Vantage's on-CD electronic manual format. The CD now contains three PDF full manuals, each optimised for on-screen viewing and printing through commercial and freeware applications such as Cerilica's RiScript, !PDF and Adobe's Acrobat. This change in product format has allowed the base price of Vantage to drop significantly from the previous 241.50ukp to 177.50ukp (UK, including package, postage and VAT).

    RiScript upgraded 1338 Reads applications
RiScript's development continues to progress well with the recent major release of version 4.15. Available now as an on-line upgrade to all existing customers, the version brings even more powerful PDF reading capabilities such as handling of CIE colour models and Euro symbol support. RiScript now also automatically embeds any Type1 font data that may already be present for more accurate document text (features such as hinting will be preserved).

RiScript customers may download the upgrade at their own convenience via the Cerilica on-line upgrade area

Home ADSL hots up 1385 Reads news
In the space of the last week, two very well known RISC OS companies have both announced their own ADSL in a box products.

R-Comp will tailor their product to meet your exact needs at around 155 UKP (includes VAT and UK postage). This will allow up to 4 machines to be hooked in at a very high speed.

The offering from CJE is similar and costs 180 UKP for the complete setup.

Both systems offer full RISC OS compatibility without the need for DHCP or other such extensions as well has mega-fast download speeds and always being online without the need to tie up your phone line.

With the cost of the actual ASDL connection dropping (with the introduction of the BT DIY kits), if you haven't got cable, this may be the high speed offer you've been waiting for!

    This just in from Artex....

The realtime strategy game TEK is complete. Well, almost: The distribution agreement has to be signed yet, and the installation software and the manual have to be finished. Thus, the actual sale of the game will be delayed a few more days.

People who have pre-ordered will soon reveive a mail with payment details, and the first copies will finally be available at the end of this month or at the beginning of May, depending on the production speed. Pre-orderers will receive their copies first.

MW Software is proud to announce the release of Crystal, the ArtWorks transparency module.

ArtWorks, the best-selling advanced vector graphics package for RISC OS, has received a large number of new features and enhancements over the past years, e.g., the TextArea module adding rotatable multi-column text areas or the BMExport module adding high-quality Sprite and GIF export options.

The new Crystal module is without doubt the most significant update ever produced: Finally, ArtWorks has full transparency support! Crystal offers three types of transparency (Mix, Stained glass, Bleach) and allows you to apply a transparency type and percentage to any ArtWorks object, no matter whether it is a shape, a line of text, a sprite, a text area, etc

Note: A quick picture has been put together by Chris Williams (he of EasyGCC fame) which shows what can be done in a very short amount of time with Crystal..

The Wakefield Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday 18th and 19th of May 2002. Opening times will be 10:30-17:30 and 10:30-16:00 on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Please note it in your diaries now!

Until recently, RiscDomain has been a rather sporadic publication, missing it's published deadlines by quite a bit. In a recent announcement though, Dave Bradforth, owner, publisher and wizzard in charge has decided that the mag is to come out monthly, with a firm set of titles for each edition.
