Today Virtal Acorn posted a press release on their web site, announcing that, following feedback from
beta testers, they have now released a new version of Virtual Risc PC for Intel Macs.
Beta testers' comments have been incorporated into the new release and those beta testers have also
received the update in the form of a Universal Binary, compatible with both Intel and Power PC Macs.
Virtual Acorn are taking orders via the on-line store or phone and copies will also be available at the forthcoming South East Show on 20th October.

Alex Singelton has published an article on his website about how Acorn Computers Ltd. were thinking of finishing producing all RISC OS products three years before Black Wednesday when Acorn Computers Ltd. ceased production of their hardware and software.

Tom Walker has released a minor fix to his RiscPC emulator for Windows and Linux. This new version fixes problems with some palette corruption.

Paul Middleton recently announced that the new price for RISC OS Adjust / 4.39 is £79 including P&P for users in the UK and £85 for users living abroad.

RISCOS Ltd. have announced a special offer for their RISC OS Adjust ROMs in celebration of the 7th Aniversary of the agreement with Element 14.

As reported on other RISC OS portals, RISC OS Ltd. have released a patch to the RISC OS 4.02 boot sequence that, fixes issues with use of the latest Toolbox modules. The patch also includes a fix for Select users who've had problems switching to and from Softloading of Select / RISC OS 4.

Castle Technology have put together an FAQ about their recent purchase our favourite OS RISC OS.
In a nutshell,
- RISCOS Ltd can still produce RO4 & Select
- Castle want Select for RO5
- Castle can grant new licences for RO (for new areas so as not to get the backs up of existing licencees)
- Tematic deal with all the new embedded RO versions

Just spotted on our fellow RISC OS news sites (Iconbar and Drobe), Castle and Pace have done a deal, with Castle buying the rights to RISC OS and Pace will receive technical support for their existing products which use RISC OS.

The impact of this move will no doubt have a major effect within the market....

I for one hoped but never imagined it would actually happen!
RISC OS Ltd have released some code into the open source community!
The open sorce code in question is the front end to !Printers+ and secondly, although not open source still welcome, Pop-up Printers (developed for the Iyonix).

After many years now of the dominance that Uncle Bill has placed on the UK, especially since "New" Labour came to power, it finally looks like the powers that be (no doubt lead on by the goings on recently in Europe) have started to see sense.
In a parlimentary answer Douglas Alexander (Home Office) said that they would be looking into the benefits of open source as opposed to propriatory (closed) applications (our mates at ElReg have more here)
The interesting points for all of these are
- What will happen over GCHQ and the "oh look, let's entrust the security of the nation to a company who's idea of security at it's best is 'OE'"
- The reply given was that the best value for money would be the option of choice. Given the advances in OpenSource desktops and office products, can this be further doom and gloom for M$?
- More importantly, if RISC OS was to go open source, would it enable us to claw our way back in as not only being faster and more efficient than just about anything out there, it's a hell of a lot more stable and friendly to use than anything out there.

The Wigan and St. Helens Linux User Group ( WISHLUG) meeting which was supposed to be this Saturday in Wigan has, unfortunately had to be cancelled until
August 3rd 2002
This is due to family illness.

In the week where those lucky bods at the Wakefield RISC OS User Group managed to see the all sparkly Microdigital Omega first hand, that we get this in from RISCOS Ltd
Select in now available for all Mico users. As special installer is available on the Select website and if you want the CD version, just ask!
This is indeed excellent news, it also means that it's two down, one to go on getting the new version of everyones favourite operating system, RISC OS. Let's hope it arrives soon!

Interesting snippet on El Reg over the latest updated from M$.
Basically, you download the latest updated to their Media Player and give them administrator rights to your machine for them to install software remotely with blow all notice as to when this will happen. The giving of the admin rights has been accepted by you by downloading the software. Note: How to improve your PC's security in one easy step. Remove Windows. Neither Microsoft nor MyRISCOS can be held to account for any damage to your machine by reading this article, though those dodgy images in C:/myfiles/hidden/bigbertha/ are quite nice ;-p

URGENT UPDATE
At long last, those pie loving folks of Wigan and St. Helens are to get their own, brand new, sparkly and fun Linux user group.
The first meeting is now to be held at the Moon under the Water, Wigan town centre at 2pm on July 20th.
All are welcome. Note: Changed due to the original venue not being very good, a pain to get to and the need for good beer ;-)

The following has been on the BBC World service:
On the BBC World Service, there has been a lot of coverage, within the last couple of hours, that the German Government has decided to replace all Microsoft-based software/hardware with Linux based software running on IBM machines. This solely for German government projects and admin.
Sun must have known about this for a long while, if it true. It follows up on the Bavarian/Munich decision of a while back and should not be unexpected.
Any choice for machines solely based on IBM hardware seems awfully restrictive. On the other hand, it gives Star Office and any OOo groupware a unique opportunity. Not to speak of Ximian's Evolution and similar utilities.
