IMPORTANT UPDATE

Please note: New EU Directive 456179

In order to meet the conditions for joining the Single European currency, all citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland must be made aware that the phrase "Spending a penny" is not to be used after 31st December 2001. From this date, the correct terminology will be: "Euronating".

Thank you for your attention.

Note: (I think this is taking the Euros ;-p - mod.)

ICQ Update planned 1583 Reads collaboration
From CSA.Announce:

Maybe some people haven't noticed, but AcornICQ doesn't function well anymore. ICQ has been taken over by AOL and now they have changed the protocol drasticly. They don't support the old protocols fully. It's only possble to login and to send messages. All other functions won't work.

So we (aICQ developers) have decided to recreate aICQ from scratch...

For all those people eagerly awaiting the new Riscstation portable, it appears that there is not long to wait now. February is believed to be the time of release for a limited number of machines initially.

Riscstation have recently updated their website (after a very long period of inactivity).

Let's hope that this announcement is echoed at BETT this week and the the education market is given a chance to run RISC OS, out and about once more.

There are less than two months to the eagerly-anticipated RISC OS Southwest Show! An annual event taking place at the Webbington Hotel, Loxton.

A list of exhibitors is expected to be published on the site shortly. Perhaps this show will be the one where we get to see a working RiscStation laptop - and maybe we'll be able to buy one! Perhaps this show will be the one where we get to see a working Microdigital Omega - and maybe we'll be able to buy one!

    Check this out:

It says that apparently RISC OS still has a loyal following, it sure does.

Also in case anyone doesn't know by now, Artex have announced that pre-orders for TEK are now being taken.

    Happy New Year to all.

Note: The BBC have kindly added a link back to My RISC OS whilst they were correcting a spelling mistake that we pointed out - Cheers :)

In a bold move (as first spotted by /.) the Office of the e-Envoy (OeE) have released a policy on Open Source Software (OSS) usage within Government!

There is currently a consultation document that is quite aware of the issues involved.

Note: Definition of Open Source Software or preferably visit the UK Mirror of the same document

A new shoutcast player has been released, with source, at http://duffell.cjb.net/. It should work on any RISC OS 3.5 or greater machine which AMPlayer works on. This is much more efficient than any previously available version.

Download now, and enjoy. go to http://www.shoutcast.com/ for lists of shoutcast server.

Make suggestions and bug reports to me, John Duffell (York address).

    Themes Updated 1247 Reads miscellaneous
There's a new theme out for My RISC OS - MyRISCOS2 with a funky new top banner.

Also fixed some CSS oddities in both MyRISCOS1 and MyRISCOS2 so they work better with Oregano.

Wondering what I'm on about? Login and then click on 'My Account' in the main menu, then click on the 'Change Theme' link.

    Enjoy!

As a very happy user of the Viewfinder Graphics Card upgrade for RiscPC's, I was pleased at this announcement recently received from the Viewfinder mailing list.

So far John has been busy improving the firmware with new versions appearing regularly, the firmware has been very stable since version 1.16 but that hasn't stopped John beavering away making it faster, smoother, and basically better.

    To quote John Kortink...

GCC 2.95.4 released 1717 Reads gnu
GCC is a free collection of compilers that provide the user with a powerful tool for translating C, C++ and Fortran source into fast ARM assembler that is suitable for execution on RISC OS.

GCCSDK is a portable build environment for creating ARM executables to be run natively on RISC OS. The build environment is designed to be hosted on a Unix-like system, such as GNU/Linux, FreeBSD or Solaris.

This is the first proper release of GCC since 2.7.2.1 back in 1997 though there have been experimental versions of 2.95.2 available since 1999.
