Articles: Don't sit on the sidelines complaining, get involved!

    Monday, September 21, 2009 - 01:48 PM, (3310 Reads)

Whilst reading various forums recently I noticed that people are still thirsty for news and articles on the various RISC OS outlets. There also seems to be some concern that with Drobe closing that there's no alternative to post your own articles or news items.
There are alternatives. Iconbar for one is still active, although there was a note a while back saying that interests of those involved had moved a little away from RISC OS in recent times. Then there is of course myriscos, which has been running for some years now, but not frequently updated with new material because people just don't seem to want to be bothered taking an active role themselves and actually submitting their own articles. Myriscos is a resource there to be used, it's up to people to make it what they want by contributing.

If you look at the various websites covering RISC OS, it's very obvious that it is a core set of authors writing all the articles and mostly a different core set of people just posting pointless, repeated arguments in the comments sections of some articles. Some such posters could have positively contributed with balanced discussion or technical "how-to" articles, but instead prefer to further destroy the community with in fighting and leave it to others to do all the work.

The RISC OS community does still exist. Yes it has slowly been getting smaller, but like all communities in the world people have to actively get involved. If you've been working on some little project on your own machine and think it may be of (even a little) interest to others, then let's hear about it. If you've got detailed computing experience in a particular field, that could be relevant to RISC OS, why not write an article for one of the websites or magazines (online or paper) and get it published so others can read about it.

Submitting articles to myriscos is pretty straight forward. Login and click the Submit Article link on in the left hand pane under the news section, then fill in the Title and body of your article and hit submit. New submissions are notified to the site administrators and one of them will review and appove them.

Don't complain that websites go into decline when you can't be bothered contributing to them. The administrators, just like everyone else, have limited amounts of time to devote to maintaining sites. If other people submit material, it's much easier for an administrator to review and approve this than to have to generate all the content themselves.
