Press Release: Qercus 278 - Imminent (November 2006)

Monday, November 13, 2006 - 11:16 AM, (2601 Reads)

John Cartmell has announced that Issue 278 of Qercus will be with readers soon.

"Again we have crammed tons of good RISC OS stuff into another extended issue." John says.

  • This issue includes news from RISC OS Ltd and RISC OS Open Ltd whilst Sue Norcross, Steve Potts, and Paul Stewart bring the news from the South East Show with reports from and background to the theatre talks.

  • David Cowell, professional digital artist, shows how he solved a problem in Creative Display - using Draw to bring together a group of items for
    presentation.

  • Our new series - looking at games and game genre that crossed the paths of Acorn users - starts with Peter Killworth's description of his design of Interactive Fiction in 'Part 1. Adventure & Quest - the story so far'. We have included links for you to try out the games for yourself and there are some classic games available to download from our web site.

  • David Buck's series on CAD (Dare to Design part three) describes the design and use of symbols.

  • The cover feature has an Egyptian theme - but this is no pyramid scheme. Richard Ashbery takes us through the steps of producing a vector graphics picture from a photograph.

  • In the Electronic Quill Colin Cartmell-Browne reads some advice about starting programming in RISC OS and asks if readers can add to that advice.

  • It's a return to eBay by David Bradforth with more electronic buying and selling.

  • Programming with Lua gets serious in part two and Gavin Wraith introduces chunks, identifiers, and type democracy.

  • And if the second editorial about old issues of Scientific American has whetted your appetite for puzzles you could try copying the technique of Henk Huinen and find an Ambigram of your name with the help of ArtWorks.

  • StarInfo and the Yellow Pages introduce a transparency that isn't - courtesy of David Llewllyn-Jones - and you can download the program from our web page to try out for yourself.

  • The QPage returns with tongue-in-cheek information, a word puzzle, and a challenge for those who are following the Lua tutorial.

  • John Ward takes us into his life as a local councillor and again shows where RISC OS helps him help the people he represents

  • And Harriet Bazley has another short story for us.

  • We even include a (relevant) book review or two!

No apologies for the length of this announcement. As usual the content of Qercus makes it impossible to provide a short summary. Next month Sue Norcross will be introducing us to a new series that she has been working on for some time - and presenting those critical differences that make RISC OS a very special operating system. We will also include Richard Ashbery's celebration of the mathematics of Art, some background to the RISC OS Open problem, a reminder of the ease of RISC OS, and the next part of all our continuing series.

We will even include a small present and preview the very special issue 280 - and others - that will follow.

And that very special issue? The clue is in the current editorial.

Is anyone reading drobe these days? At one time, had I mentioned druck's name, he would have been bouncing in within seconds. As he hasn't replied to the news that Qercus 278 is out within the month, and hence he should be eating his words as promised last month, perhaps MyRISC OS readers could prod him?
And on a serious note - issue 278 is being posted (it takes 2 or 3 days to get it all done) and should be with UK readers over the weekend if not before.
Good reading everyone!
