Operating System: Previewing RISC OS 4+ and Select - 7 - Filer & Filer Components

Wednesday, August 29, 2001 - 12:14 AM, (2213 Reads)

Changing the Filer is likely to produce most praise - and complaint. the Filer is our means of handling the 'objects' in the computer and its use can be compared with driving a car; swapping 'break' and 'clutch' pedals may arguable be more ergonomically efficient but it's likely to cause one or two complaints from survivors.

Unsurprisingly RISCOS Ltd have chosen to improve the Filer in little ways. The icon bar Filers now all include a standard ShareFS dialogue which also allows other developers to follow the same path. CDs, HardDrive, Floppy Discs and RAM contents can now all be shared. The Filer itself includes a Share option for directories which simplifies a previously confusing means of allowing sharing of directory contents - and shared directories are indicated in the Filer windows.

If like me you carefully number files 01, 02, etc and are annoyed when other people such as digital camera designers use 1, 2, 3 then maybe you know what's coming next. Numbers don't sort properly alphabetically. Files numbered to eg 12 are sorted eg photo1, photo10, photo11, photo12, photo2, photo3, etc. Now there's an option to sort files numerically and you don't have to remember 01, 02, etc anymore.

It's an excellent 'small' improvement.

Filenames can now be forced to be viewed as lowercase text - to make it easier to read - but this is only a display option and the name will still be stored in its original format.

Files can be renamed by selecting the file then clicking on the filename - even simpler than the RISC OS 4.0x use of the Alt key.

Selecting a group of files is now simplified by being highlighted - the action is unchanged but it's now easier to use as you can see what action you are taking as you make the action; it's clear throughout the action which files will be included in the group once completed.

One other, long-standing, quibble:

if you resize or update a Filer window whilst in the middle of renaming a file - it no longer loses the rename icon forcing you to start again.

If you create a directory you can rename it directly from the default name - there is no need to select the directory or its name - and when a file is dragged the dragged image includes the filename whilst groups of files show the number of objects being dragged.

For less experienced users the Filer defaults to 'confirm delete' - experienced users will have accepted their capacity for error and ensured that it's set at that in any case!

FilerAction, providing operations such as copying and counting, now also acts as a proxy for other tools.

Third-party authors can now use FilerAction to hook 'bells & whistles' versions of multi-tasking operations and eg produce a graphical display in place of the numerical count.

ROL have indicated that they'd be interested in including such extension tools in future releases of Select - should authors be interested in releasing their product in this way.

Quick format is an option in the Floppy disc format window that simply formats the map and directory instead of the whole disc.

Finally the CDFS filer has been completely re-written whilst offering the same facilities as before together with Share (as indicated above) and CDPlayer launch as noted in my article (numbered 9) about Applications.

The CD Filer also adds information about the current CD.

In these articles I've tried to keep to the bare facts rather than push my view of the Select package. Please ask questions or make comments about the articles - I'll respond where appropriate and probably make my opinion clear.
I will try to update these articles where I find errors or more information comes available so check back later; for example I've recently re-written and extended the Preface article.

If you want to read my gut reaction to the Select scheme you should read the October 2001 issue of Acorn User - I wrote that comment on the scheme immediately following the Press meeting.

All these sound useful, although nothing ground-breaking, except for, "Files can be renamed by selecting the file then clicking on the filename."

I hate how Windows and MacOS do this. I'm always finding that I mean to select a file or directory, and instead it starts to rename.

A keyboard shortcut such as Windows's f2 (or RISC OS 4, which I don't have) is a much better method, IMHO.

So it still doesn't do all that CDROMFS does? Why rewrite it then? To add more bugs?
