News: Virus on ARM based handheld devices - Proof of Concept

Monday, July 19, 2004 - 12:59 PM, (5386 Reads)

As reported on TheRegister, the first PocketPC virus has been found in the wild. Reportedly capable of also infecting ARM based mobile phones running PocketPC, this virus is more of a Proof of Concept, clearly announcing its presence to the user before infecting files. The Virus "Duts" was apparently created to prove the concept (for those whom may have doubted it). Produced by the 29A virus writing group, this was clearly not a serious attempt at infecting thousands of PDAs and mobile phones, as the code asked the user's permission before spreading and the authors also posted the code to anti-virus software companies around the time of its release.

Another interesting attribute of the virus is its small size and the fact that it is written in ARM assembler.
