Report: Quick Summary of the South East Show

Monday, November 04, 2002 - 10:00 PM, (4646 Reads)

Hi,

I've posted a few snaps from the South East Show.

The show was pretty crushy so I didn't really get any great opportunities to have clear shots. Hopefully these will be of some interest though.

Show Pics

And a quick summary of the show... I thought it was worth the long drive to see the new machines and software. The show appeared to be well supported by visitors (no doubt this was helped by the publicity around the Iyonix PC from Castle). The venue was probably a little too small for the number of visitors who turned up though. For most of the day it was quite difficult to move about the hall due to the volume of people in the room.

The Iyonix PC looks quite impressive. Lots of information about the specifications of the machine is available separately, so I won't duplicate this here, but the machines I saw running were quite impressive and pretty stable (although apparently Mike Glover did managed to crash the show theatre one briefly).

The 26-bit emulator was running on the AAUG stand and was quite impressive, although as was to be expected did run a little slow when "interpreting" 26-bit code on the fly into 32-bit runnable code. There is still some optimisation work planned which will further improve this amazing bit of software.

32-bit Castle were selling their new Acorn Development tools and giving free t-shirts away with every purchase.

RiscStation Roy Heslop was in attendance to take questions about the portable (amongst other things). The PCB for the laptop had suffered at set back in pre-production runs, some faults were found in the boards produced. These faults were extra bits of tracks which were shorting out other tracks on the board and were apparently a result of a bug in the PCB manufacturing software (not running under RISC OS obviously!). The manufacturers are working to resolve this fault as quickly as possible.

CJE I did manage to find something with CJE didn't have in stock!.... In fairness, though they did tell me that some had been present earlier in the day. Doh!

R-Comp were there as usual with new products, including Uni-Print (to print to any printer via a PC with it's drivers) and also Dial-Up2 as well as many games and other Internet related products such as broadband starter kits.

APDL Dave Holden was doing brisk business with lots of Software and Media for sale.

Virtual Acorn were present although I never managed to get very near to their stand.

Cerilica were selling copies of Vantage (they've been working on a 32-bit version I believe) and also a new version of Insignia and other software.

NetBSD had a stand and have been recently playing with a Simtec Hydra card, trying to get this running under NetBSD on Acorn/32 variants of the OS.

There were many others at the show too (Apologies for missing anyone out), although there were also others who were noticeable by their absence.
