Information: News from RiscStation on the laptop

Friday, July 12, 2002 - 08:54 PM, (4569 Reads)

Roy Heslop, head chappy at RiscStation has sent us through some much needed information regarding the laptop.

"First, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who have waited patiently for news on the laptop. I can appreciate that people are waiting and have paid up and that the delays are very annoying, but I can say that the wait is almost over" Roy continues...

"The problems have been compounded with a problem on our website which our providers are currently looking into and which we hope they will have resolved very shortly"

After the apologies, comes the really good stuff

Portable Update 10-07-2002

Development update.

Latest update from our developers is that "we are looking to hand over a functional prototype to you in early August".

A tremendous amount of work is going on behind the scenes including these groundbreaking firsts for RISCOS market.

  1. Digital VIDC output to drive the LCD panel directly.
  2. New 10/100Mb Ethernet controller and driver software USB interface and driver software
  3. PCMCIA interface and driver software
  4. Power supply and battery management
  5. Custom firmware capable of soft-loading RISC OS

Recent developments include:

  1. Improving USB interface design and driver software (including peripheral drivers).
  2. Removing obsolete components and replacing them with more modern parts.

We are now implementing these recent changes to the schematics, prior to completing the final board design.

Before anyone starts to jump:
'Latest update from our developers is that "we are looking to hand over a functional prototype to you in early August". ' really means that RS is going to have a functional proto in early august.. so, it will be some time after that before customers will have theirs.

and:
I hope that 'removing obsolete components and replacing them with more modern parts' means they'll ditch the VIDC and use the lightning from MD (since they have some kind of agreement together)..
