News: Release of Net100 imminent

Wednesday, March 27, 2002 - 04:42 PM, (1639 Reads)

Simtec have now released the first pictures of their new 100Mb ethernet NIC card for Risc PCs. The Net100 has 512k of flash memory on board and includes RISC OS driver software. The Net100 also includes the oddly named !Snafu (Simtecs Non-specific Advanced Flash Utility - acronyms gone mad!) which allows the drivers to be updated if required.

More pictures are available from the Simtec site.

Pre-production board have already been sent to vendors and reviewers and it will be available in early April (2002!) from CTA Direct, RComp Interactive and Stuart Tyrrell Developments.

Obviously, utilising the Risc PC NIC slot still leaves your podule slots available for other devices as well, however, fitting NIC cards can be a little tricky as clear access to the motherboard is required.

The price is set at £69 ex VAT and should therefore be in the region of £89 including VAT and delivery!

This is massively undercuts the current prices of Castle's forthcoming 10/100Mb network card/podule and the existing 10Mb cards, the other vendors may see their market vanish overnight!

Looks to me that they like the acronym SNAFU and had to think up a suitable version that they could claim it stood for instead of...

Situation Normal All F**cked Up

is this a nod towards that other Acorn company RTFM ? which we all know stands for...

Well, "early April" is coming close - but I didn't see any review (who are the "reviewers"?) of this card on the net yet!

Anyone knows who had a closer look at it (especially it's reliability)?
