Information: Server Suite and Insignia at MAUG, Wed 16th Jan 2002

Thursday, January 10, 2002 - 11:05 PM, (1343 Reads)

In this bulletin:
  • January meeting details
  • RiscStation portable news & February meeting news

The next meeting of the Manchester Acorn User Group will be:

    Jeremy Coates (Co-Comp Ltd), demonstrating:
  • R-Comp's Messenger Pro Server Suite (advanced beta)
  • Cerilica's Insignia (release version)

    6:45pm for 7:30pm, Wednesday 16th January 2002

Trafford Metrovick Rugby & Cricket Club
    Finnybank Road
    Sale
    Cheshire
    M33 6LR
  • Messenger Pro Server Suite allows a RISC OS computer to act as a mail server not only for RISC OS machines, but also for other platforms.

Cerilica's Insignia allows easy creation of text title banners for use in web pages or printed documents.

This will be a good opportunity to see these two new pieces of software - Messenger Pro Server Suite is still in beta, while Insignia has been released recently - demonstrated by someone who is familiar with both of them. We suspect Jeremy may also mention My RISC OS briefly at some point!

There will be MAUG members at the venue from around 6:45pm, and probably until around 10pm (but you can arrive and leave whenever you like). There is no certainty that the bar in the club will be open, but there is an off license and a Chinese takeaway a few minutes walk away (and a pizza parlour slightly further - do ask if you would like directions to any of these). There should also be tea and coffee available at the venue itself.

The venue is just a few hundred yards from M60 J7, with plentiful free parking right outside, and easy ground floor access. It is on the bus route from Manchester city centre, and is about fifteen to twenty minutes walk from Dane Road Metro station. A map is available at our website, or contact us as below if you need more details.

RiscStation Portable News & Next MAUG Meeting

Some of you will be aware that the RiscStation laptop has finally been publicly demonstrated, in its case and working, at the BETT show in London; and that RiscStation are now taking orders and deposits for the machine.

Roy Heslop of RiscStation Ltd has provisionally agreed to demonstrate the portable for the February meeting of MAUG, on the evening of Wednesday 20th February at our usual venue at the Trafford Metrovick club. Put this date in your diaries now!

This is a major step forward for the RISC OS community, finally realising hopes which were first raised so many years ago with promises of Acorn's Stork portable. It will also be a crucial deciding factor in establishing whether RISC OS enthusiasts are still prepared to invest in RISC OS systems.

I therefore take the unusual step of repeating the relevant details below.
(Note that most of RiscStation Ltd are away at BETT this week!)

  • Portable Base Unit & Docking Stn: £1248 + VAT (£1466.40 inc VAT)

Just a quick correction - Roy Heslop of RiscStation Ltd will actually be visiting MAUG to demonstrate the laptop (hopefully) on Wednesday 20th ** March ** 2002, not 20th February.

The 20th February meeting will go ahead with a different topic (yet to be confirmed), and of course this week's January meeting is also still going ahead as described.
